Leaning in – What really matters?
Introduction Women leaning in…. What really matters? Hang in there with me with regard to the title of this blog and the preamble. All will become clear along the way. I love being a coach. In addition to watching my clients grow and learn about themselves, every day I learn about myself through my clients. […]

Introduction This past weekend I was having a conversation with someone at the stables where I ride. We were chatting about conversations with horses, believe it or not. I ride a couple of horses, and recently started riding the same horse that she does. His name is Fruitloop, and he is a sweet guy with […]

Introduction This article and exercise below comes from a Harvard Business Review article written by John Baldoni called “Sum up your leadership Legacy in six words.”. I love this concept and exercise as in my view it addresses two important aspects of being a leader. Firstly, if we strip away the fluff from what leadership […]

Introduction Ontological Coaching focuses on Way of Being, which is where our perceptions and attitudes live, often deep seated and out of awareness. Our Way of Being is a dynamic interrelationship between language, emotions and body shaping how we observe the world. To bring about fundamental, lasting change, shifts need to occur in all these […]

“The root of joy is gratefulness…It is not joy that makes us grateful; it is gratitude that makes us joyful.” ― David Steindl-Rast For too long, we’ve taken gratitude for granted. Yes, “thank you” is an essential, everyday part of family dinners, trips to the store, business deals, and political negotiations. That might be why […]

Introduction
As a coach, I am lucky to have amazing conversations with my clients, watching them have aha moments, and change the story they have about themselves. Conversations are a very important part of bringing about shifts and changes, and provide a springboard for a new Way of Being. Through them the people I am in a coaching relationship with are often able to see themselves differently and be able to do things differently.
A crucial part of what we talk about is how they can keep developing, and building their skill and capacity beyond our meetings. You can thing of it as a unique personal development and training plan, based on the premise of....
How we change or stay the same
We act in certain ways, and the practices we engage in turn us into the kind of person we are. These inform what we value, the commitments we make, how we react, who we have relationships with and how those relationships are. All of this can be thought of as our natural and normal comfortable reactions to everything. And because of all these things we pay attention to certain things (who and how we are as observers) and not others. And because we pay attention to certain things we act in certain ways.
So we can think of this as a cycle.... and this cycle is no problem if things are working for us. But, when this cycle stops working for us, we don't have to be trapped. To quote a very famous scientist “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results”.
